I really don't want to be carrying 50 planks in my inventory when I try to build a fence. I feel where you're coming from. You don't need the planks in your inventory, but the game won't let you build further than where the planks lose focus. You can use your backpack, but the space is limited.This is how I stack my planks so they take less space. I still can choose to make multiple stack near spots where I intend to build.Trees take damage just like zombies, so leveling up your axe skill and strength will make it easier. I'd recommend learning how to make stone axes too because you are going to go through a LOT of axes in the beginning.
