Without free archetype it's still a good idea, but you also have a lot of great Magus feats to spend your class feats on, so it's more tough decision. Sparkling Targe is not a super effective tank; it is a more defensive Magus, but will tend to have insufficient actions most of the time, so you'll be trading off offense and defense a lot.

That is the biggest hurdle for this build imo. You won't be a full gunslinger, so won't have your way reload until later levels to help even out your action economy. And Magus in general is already pretty action starved.
