Like kenpom, BPI is an efficiency metric at heart, where per-possession efficiency, game location, and opponent strength determine most everything. Like kenpom, BPI is largely influenced by preseason projections this early into the season. In addition to this, BPI factors in major injuries, travel distance, and downplays outlier results.

KenPom is just measuring efficiency. Currently, the teams ranked 9th through 23 are all roughly within 3 points of eachother. Meaning on a neutral floor all these teams would be pickems or slight favorites. A few bad games and Saint Mary’s would drop like a rock with how close everyone is.
