The issue with using dye over henna is that many boxed henna dyes use mineral salts to shift the colour. Those mineral salts are what the dye reacts to. If you use pure henna, you won't have this issue. However removing henna is either extremely difficult or impossible, depending on the person.

Henna coats the hair shaft where as color used with a developer actually opens the cuticle up and deposits or lifts out the color.
