At 50 yards a heart shot on most deer with a jacketed soft point from a 357 mag, a 44 mag or a 45 Colt will kill a deer. You should practice your tracking skills ahead of time. It would be nice if you could shoot a bunch of rifles prior to deciding on which one to buy. That may not be a realistic expectation.
Either one would be a fine choice. In .357 mag I'm a big fan of the S&W 686 and the 627. The 627 is an 8 shot .357 mag N frame, and is an awesome gun. In .44 mag I like the S&W 629 Classic.
