Try a road test pulling a hill, the longer the better. If you hear the noise select 4x4 high right away. If noise stops it "may be" the splines on the hubs slightly touching. Ford uses Vacuum to hold the locking hubs off, If vacuum is lost, like when pulling a hill, they try to slightly engage, thus the noise. Good luck.

Nov 9, 2021 · IWE = Integrated Wheel End. It is what connects the front wheels when you engage 4WD. In 2WD the front wheels just spin like a 2WD truck. Before 2021 they were activated by vacuum and are plagued by vacuum leaks that can partially engage when in 2WD and then they grind. For the 21 MY they are not vacuum actuated. Discussion starter · #1 · Nov 24, 2020. 2012 XLT. When in 2wd the transfer case hums, like bad noisy tires. First snow today needed 4wd for a bit and the noise went completely away. When I switch back and forth the noise goes away in 4x4 but returns when I switch back to 2wd. There is no out of the ordinary operation of the t case in 2wd.
The noise isn't horribly loud, but I can easily hear it over the engine and road noise. This started a few weeks ago.
