I wouldn't go in brown bear territory without at least a 45-70 or .444 carbine. For black bear, with the right loads a 10mm should be sufficient in skilled hands. I'd rather have a .44 mag, but then again, I'd really rather have a 45-70 or a 12 gauge with 3" slugs. Most black bears aren't that big or that hard to kill.
