Fix the ES if its broken. I was completely anti ES. My wife bought the Recon ES and at first I was like this is the dumbest thing I have ever seen! Then I fell in love with it and went out and bought a Rancher 420ES. I love it! I feel like its having the ease of an Auto 4 wheeler but with the reliability and toughness of a foot shift.

When she first starts out with a cold engine, shifing from 1st to 2nd, you have to hit the shift button 3 or 4 times before it will shift into 2nd. After running the bike for awhile and the engine is really warmed up, it will shift alot better.
If you're going to do this, I would just change the shifter shaft. Change #11 to #10 with the splines on it and buy a foot shifter to go on it. Then, just remove the shift motor reduction gears and bolt the shift motor back on. Removing the gears will make it easier to shift because it won't have to turn the shift motor.Hi, new to the forums here. Pry open the universal foot pedal shifter so it will fit around the hex. You'll want to take the floor board plastic off for easier access. Also, remove the reduction gears from your ES, located where the shifting motor is. Weld your new foot shifter to the hex gear shifter.

So on the ES and AT models, apparently there is a switch next to the reverse cable lever that grounds when the reverse lever is pulled, and unless that switch grounds, the ECU won't let the thing shift into reverse. I'm getting code 21 which means the angle sensor is not getting the right voltages, I'm stumped and can't figure out what's going on, I switched out the sensor with another 420 and didn't help, also changed the shift motor, the link to check the ohms is not working. Finally had enough of the ES on our '04 Rancher. Basically my plan is to remove remove the shift gears on the front crankcase over and then replace the shifter shaft with one from a manual shift rancher, and add a standard shift lever.
